We eat and we drink, we feel and we think
Far down the street we stray
I laugh and I cry and I’m haunted by
Things I never meant nor wished to say
The midnight rain follows the train
We all wear the same thorny crown
Soul to soul, our shadows roll
And I’ll be with you when the deal goes down— Bob Dylan, When the Deal Goes Down, Modern Times

Dear Friends,
Just thought I’d write a few words, wishing you a Merry Christmas and joy of the season. I just finished working with a client and now I’m sitting by my lit tree, listening to the Vince Guaraldi Trio on the internet radio, feeling nostalgic.
Last night I talked to my parents and brother (who lives in NYC and is currently visiting them in India) who were celebrating Christmas at home. It made me realize it’s been 10 years since I’ve been home for Christmas. I know its hard for people in the North to imagine a tropical Christmas — especially when we all dream of a white Christmas. But it is a special time in Bandra, nonetheless. Midnight mass, with the streets lit up and just an indescribably sweet smell of the festivity in the air.
Yesterday, I also heard from my Uncle (father’s brother) who is in Merchant navy today. He is also an astrologer, although he never worked as one ‘professionally.’ [Given my grandfather was an astrologer, I guess you could say it’s in the blood.] He let me know he’d set sail from Tubarao, Brazil on his way to China. He also told me of the new astrology software he bought, which was amazingly accurate.
But what struck me as I read his letter, was that it was an old-fashioned “letter.” Like the old days when people wrote by snail mail. Not just a quick email. It was more than communication, rather a heartfelt communion where you feel the persons spirit in the room talking to you. This got me thinking about the current astrology, all the planets in Capricorn, with Mercury due to station retrograde in the sign tomorrow.
Capricorn is the sign of tradition. Now, Venus enters Capricorn today, joining the Sun, Pluto and Mercury in the sign there does seem to be a nostalgic mood bearing down. I don’t know if you felt it, but I have to say yesterdays Sun-Pluto conjunction truly did shake things to the core.
As much as we need to let go of old rules and structures that no longer work. There is something to be said about old-fashioned values that never go out of style. Capricorn is the highest form of material manifestation. When it comes to communication, how are do we speak to each other with a respect for the “thou.”
When it comes to values it is about integrity. And integrity is always a personal thing. That is where we cannot allow the so called “morals” of society define or dictate our choices. If one is living by their personal truth, there can be no fear. “Satyameva Jayate…” This is the essence of the Saturn-Pluto square in Libra and Capricorn. To take responsibility for our truth and choices.
When it comes to love, there is something to be said about courtship. But careful again that we don’t let the values of society define what works for us individually and with the people we share ties with. With Pluto right there at the beginning of Capricorn, it feels like no one can pass through the gate until we leave baggage behind. We cannot walk into the future with our arms and hearts full of the past. Then we can clear the way to build new foundations and structures, that will last us for years to come.
Mercury is stationary now and communication may feel like it is at a halt. But news tends to surface around these retrograde stations and given that Mercury is conjunct the North Node — the conversations we are having now play a huge role in our destiny.
There is going to be a review of the past few weeks. But really, this stuff can go back generations given we are talking about Capricorn. There are ideas and ideologies that have no business being in the present. What are the things we need to learn from the past before we can move forward?
If we don’t learn from history we are doomed to repeat it. It’s not so much that we need to dwell on the past as learn and unlearn from it. A useful test at any given time would be to ask — is something working? If not then it needs to be reworked.
A lot is changing between now and the middle of January when Mercury stations direct again at the time of the New Moon and Solar Eclipse in Capricorn. By then we will have a better understanding of this new landscape we are moving into. It is constant process of discovering. Over the coming Mercury retrograde, move in a state of receptivity we could unearth great treasures.
With that I wish you yet again a Merry Christmas, may yours be joyous and may you be blessed and filled with the love of the creator…
Lovingly,
Priya
